Three cars, one number. With a Lotus it is not the power that matters but how much of it there is per tonne — so all three are measured with the same ruler here.
The whole chassis weighs 68 kilos. That is roughly half what a steel one would weigh, and it is why an Elise with an 1800 cc engine goes quicker than the paper says. It was the first production car with a bonded aluminium extrusion chassis.
What the Exige added over the Elise was not mainly power, it was downforce. At 161 km/h it is pressed down by about 45 kilos, the Elise by not quite six. That is where the difference in a corner comes from, not from the power figure. Something over six hundred were built.
Cosworth bored the production 3.5 out to four litres with a dry sump. The engine is good for over four hundred horsepower, but the GT4 rules hold it at three hundred and sixty with a restrictor. The 96-litre safety cell and the air jacks are not equipment, they are what an endurance race demands.
